Napoleon army defeated Austrians and Russians. On December 2nd 1805, the three emperors battle was fought in Austerlitz (Slavkov) near Brno. Shortly after that the bishopric was established on the hill Petrov. In 1742, Prussian army tried to capture the city but they also broke their teeth on it. This big Swedish defeat prevented them from marching against Vienna and gave more time to create an Austrian offence and end the war promptly.ДЇollowing the war, the city became a forcible baroque fortress. In the Thirty Years War the city was besieged by Swedish forces, yet they did not manage to conquer the city. Brno became a prominent meeting point of three big trade routes leading from Poland, Austria and Hungary. During centuries, the town was surrounded by fortifications and its importance was rising. Famous Cistercian nunnery (monastery for nuns) was founded by queen Eliska Rejcka. In 1243, the villages of Brno were united and Brno got the royal town privileges. Approximately 1020 AD Brno castle was built by the duke Bretislav and small colony on the bank of the river Svratka started to spread. The surrounding of Brno was settled around 4000 BC when the first agricultural colonies were founded. And when we speak about the students we mean students not even from Czech or Slovak Republic, but students from the rest of the world, who chose Brno as their city of studies. There are almost 75 000 students at 6 universities. It is said that Brno is the city of students. It is amazing how easily you can find everything (and even more) what you ask for on a relatively small place. With its amount of inhabitants which is 383 000, it is not a big metropolis, but this fact only creates the magical atmosphere inside the city. Brno is not the biggest city or even the capital, but itвЂ™s important place on the field of history, politics, medicine and culture is undubitable. It attractively combines the elements of history with modern and functional buildings and the wide green spread all around. Brno, the pearl of Moravian countryside, is a well-know place for many tourists who decided to visit the Czech Republic.
